August has brought a burst of movement and momentum to Fireflies Early Learning in Cooroy, as our children dive into a series of playful STEM activities for children exploring the basics of motion and energy.
Making Physics Playful
Physics might sound like a subject for much older students, but its core ideas, push, pull, roll, and stop, are things young children experience every single day. Turning everyday movement into structured STEM activities for children helps them:
– Build vocabulary for describing force and motion
– Practise prediction and observation skills
– Understand simple cause-and-effect relationships
– Develop persistence when an experiment does not go as expected

Our Physics Fun Program
Ramp Races
Children build ramps from blocks and cardboard, testing how different objects roll, slide, or tumble down at different angles and speeds.
Marble Runs
Cardboard tubes and recycled materials become elaborate marble run creations, letting children experiment with gravity, momentum, and design.
Balloon Rockets
A balloon, a straw, and a length of string create a simple rocket that shoots along a line, a thrilling introduction to the idea of energy and propulsion.
Pendulum Play
Simple swinging pendulums made from string and small weights let children observe rhythm, motion, and energy transfer in a mesmerising, hands-on way.
Continuing the Investigation at Home
Families can extend our STEM activities for children at home with simple ideas such as rolling different balls down a cushion ramp, building a domino chain, or blowing bubbles and watching how they move through the air.
At Fireflies Early Learning, we love watching children’s faces light up as they discover, again and again, that the world around them is full of fascinating forces just waiting to be explored.
