New Term Energy: Fresh Learning Objectives for Term 2
Fireflies Early Learning · Cooroy, QLD · April 2026
There is something genuinely electric about the start of a new term. Children return to us refreshed, a little taller, and brimming with new stories, new questions, and new readiness to explore. At Fireflies Early Learning, Term 2 is one of our favourite seasons — and this year, we are stepping into it with fresh intentions, renewed energy, and a deep commitment to the children and families we serve.
Nestled in the Noosa hinterland at 22 Kauri Street, Cooroy, our nature-inspired centre is a place where every child is seen as capable, curious, and full of potential. As Term 2 begins, our team of passionate educators has been thoughtfully reflecting on the learning journeys of every child in our care — setting fresh goals, designing new provocations, and preparing our beautiful environments for a term full of discovery.
“Free the child’s potential, and you will transform him into the world.”
— Maria Montessori
Why Term 2 Is a Particularly Special Season
Term 2 arrives with the gentle shift of autumn on the Sunshine Coast — cooler mornings, softer light, and a landscape that is still lush and alive. For early childhood educators, this seasonal change is an invitation in itself: to slow down, to notice, to go deeper with the children who have already settled beautifully into the rhythms of our centre.
By Term 2, the relationships are formed. Children know their educators, they know their peers, and they know the spaces they inhabit. This security is the foundation upon which the most meaningful learning is built. When children feel genuinely safe and connected, they are free to take risks, ask big questions, and pursue their curiosity with confidence and joy.
Learning in Autumn at Fireflies
Our nature-inspired outdoor environments are rich with Term 2 learning invitations — from autumn leaves and shifting shadows to seasonal changes in our garden and the creatures that emerge in the cooler months. At Fireflies, the seasons are not just background — they are part of our curriculum, weaving science, literacy, maths, and wonder into every day.
Our Six Learning Focus Areas for Term 2
Each term at Fireflies, our educators collaboratively identify key focus areas that build on what children have already explored and extend their thinking in exciting new directions. For Term 2, our six learning objectives reflect both the developmental priorities of our rooms and the rich possibilities of the autumn season here in Cooroy.
Language & Literacy — Deepening vocabulary through rich storytelling, nature journalling, and the kind of meaningful conversation that happens when children feel truly heard.
Mathematical Thinking — Building on Term 1 foundations with new provocations in measurement, data, spatial reasoning, and the maths hiding in our natural outdoor environments.
Social & Emotional Growth — Strengthening friendship skills, conflict resolution, and emotional literacy — helping children develop the inner tools they will carry through their whole lives.
Nature & Sustainability — Deepening our environmental stewardship through garden work, sustainability practices, and hands-on science in our beautiful outdoor learning spaces.
Creative Expression — Offering new art media, materials, and open-ended provocations that challenge children to express their ideas, emotions, and discoveries in fresh ways.
Independence & Confidence — Building self-help skills, decision-making, and the quiet courage that comes from trying, persisting, and experiencing genuine success.
What’s New in Each Room This Term
Our educators have been preparing something special for every room at Fireflies. Here’s a glimpse of what Term 2 holds across our learning environments:
Nursery Room
This term our Nursery is introducing new sensory provocations inspired by the autumn season — textured natural materials, calming earth tones, and a new focus on emerging communication and connection. Our educators are deepening their intentional narration practice, building the rich language foundations that will serve our youngest learners for life.
Toddler Room (2–3 years)
In our Toddler room, Term 2 brings a fresh focus on independence and self-help skills — pouring, dressing, tidying, and the quiet confidence that grows when children discover what they can do for themselves. We’re also expanding our nature play provocations with new loose parts collections and a deeper engagement with our garden and outdoor environments.
Pre-Kindergarten Room (3–4 years)
Our Pre-Kindy room is launching a Term 2 inquiry project inspired by the children’s questions from Term 1 — exploring themes of transformation, growth, and the natural world. New creative materials, a collaborative nature journal, and a deeper investigation into our garden and seasonal changes will drive this term’s rich, child-led learning journey.
Kindergarten Room (4–5 years)
In Kindergarten, Term 2 is about deepening school readiness in the most authentic way possible — through problem-solving challenges, collaborative projects, literacy and numeracy embedded in real experiences, and a growing awareness of their place in the community and the wider world. Our government-approved Kindy program continues to support each child’s unique developmental journey with care, rigour, and joy.
From Our Educators
Every new term, we spend time before the children arrive simply sitting in our environments and asking: does this space still reflect who these children are and what they’re ready for? Sometimes the answer is yes. Often, it means rearranging a shelf, introducing a new provocation, or removing something that has run its course. The environment is our third educator — and Term 2 is always a chance to make it sing again.
Our Sustainability Intentions for Term 2
Sustainability is not an add-on at Fireflies — it is woven into the fabric of who we are and how we learn. Term 2 brings with it some exciting new sustainability intentions that our educators, children, and families will pursue together throughout the term:
- Expanding our garden program — new seasonal plantings, composting initiatives, and a deeper engagement with where our food comes from and how we care for the soil beneath our feet.
- Nature journalling — children across all rooms will be invited to document the changes they notice in our outdoor environment throughout the term, building observation skills and a deep sense of connection to place.
- Reducing single-use materials — building on our existing eco-friendly practices, we are continuing to find creative ways to use natural, recycled, and reusable materials in our learning provocations.
- Community connections — we are exploring opportunities to connect our children with the broader Cooroy and Noosa hinterland community this term, embedding a sense of belonging and environmental responsibility that reaches beyond our gate.
How Families Can Support Term 2 at Home
The learning at Fireflies is always richer when families are part of it. Here are some simple, meaningful ways to extend the Term 2 energy at home and deepen the connections your child is making at our centre:
- Ask open-ended questions about their day — “What surprised you today?” or “What did you notice outside?” invites deeper reflection than “How was your day?”
- Go on an autumn nature walk together — collect leaves, notice shadows, look for signs of seasonal change in your garden or local park. Talk about what you observe together.
- Share your family’s stories and skills — if your family has a special connection to sustainability, cooking, music, language, or the natural world, we would love you to share it with us.
- Read together every evening — the single most powerful thing a family can do to support language and literacy development is to read aloud together, every day. Even ten minutes makes a profound difference.
- Celebrate what they can do themselves — resist the urge to help before it’s needed. When you step back and let your child try, you send the most powerful message of all: I believe you can do this.
- Stay connected with our team — our educators love hearing from families about what children are interested in, excited about, or working through at home. Your insights make our programming richer for every child.
At Fireflies Early Learning, a new term is never just a fresh page on the calendar — it is a genuine renewal of our commitment to the children and families in our care. Every day we get to be part of your child’s early learning journey is a privilege, and Term 2 is a beautiful reminder of just how much there is still to discover, create, and celebrate together.
Here’s to a Term 2 full of curiosity, connection, and growth. From all of us at Fireflies Early Learning in Cooroy — we can’t wait to see what this season brings.
