At Fireflies Early Learning, we know that some of the most important learning in the early years doesn’t happen through structured activities or educator-led instruction. It happens in the spaces between — in the negotiations over a toy, the shared laughter during pretend play, the moment a child comforts a friend who is upset, or the joyful discovery two children make together at the water table.
Learning through connection with friends is one of the deepest and most enduring forms of learning there is.
Why Friendships Are Foundational to Development
The relationships children form in their early years — with educators, with peers, and with their own sense of self — are among the most powerful influences on their development. Friendships in particular offer children something unique: a peer relationship built on mutual choice, equality, and shared interest.
Through friendships, young children develop:
Social Skills
Sharing, taking turns, entering play groups, resolving conflicts, understanding social cues, and negotiating — these are complex skills that can only be developed through practice with real peers in real situations.
Emotional Intelligence
Children learn to read others’ emotions, respond to distress, celebrate others’ successes, and manage their own feelings in the context of relationships. A friend’s reaction is one of the most powerful feedback mechanisms a young child can experience.
Language and Communication
Children’s conversations with peers tend to be richer, longer, and more complex than their conversations with adults. Peer interaction drives language development in extraordinary ways.
Cognitive Development
Playing together — especially in open-ended, imaginative play — challenges children to negotiate shared narratives, solve problems collaboratively, and hold multiple perspectives simultaneously. This is cognitively demanding and deeply enriching.
Sense of Belonging
Feeling known, liked, and valued by peers is fundamental to a child’s sense of self and their willingness to take risks, try new things, and engage fully in learning.
How Fireflies Early Learning Nurtures Friendships
Creating Time and Space for Play
Our program protects large blocks of uninterrupted play time — because meaningful friendships develop through extended, immersive play experiences, not five-minute bursts between scheduled activities.
Thoughtful Environment Design
Our spaces are designed to invite small group collaboration — cosy reading corners, water tables for two or three children, construction areas with enough materials for cooperative building. The environment says “this is a place for connecting.”
Supporting Children Through Conflict
We see conflict as a learning opportunity, not a failure. When children disagree, our educators offer gentle support — helping children name feelings, hear each other’s perspective, and find solutions together. These guided moments build the conflict resolution skills that are essential for healthy relationships throughout life.
Celebrating Friendship Stories
We document and celebrate the stories of friendship in our centre — the friendships that have formed, the kind acts we have noticed, the collaborative creations children have built together. These stories are shared with families and displayed in our space, communicating that we value connection deeply.
Gentle Support for Children Who Find Friendship Difficult
Not every child finds friendship easy. Some children need additional time, space, or support to develop social confidence. Our educators are attentive and proactive in gently scaffolding social situations for children who find peer interaction challenging — always at the child’s own pace and with enormous warmth.
A Message for Families
If you want to support your child’s friendships outside the centre, some simple ideas:
– Invite a friend from the centre for a playdate
– Talk about their friendships with genuine curiosity — “who did you play with today? What did you do together?”
– Read books that feature friendship themes
– Model your own friendships and the way you care for the people in your life
At Fireflies Early Learning, we believe that the friendships children form in these early years leave lasting imprints on their hearts — and we are honoured to be the place where so many of those friendships begin.
