At Fireflies Early Learning in Cooroy, August is when our rooms begin to transform. Literary Landscape is our month-long project of building book week ideas into the very environment our children learn in, turning our centre into a living storybook.

Why the Environment Matters for Literacy

Children absorb so much from the spaces around them, and a rich, story-filled environment can spark curiosity long before a single page is turned. Our book week ideas this year focus on transforming physical spaces, helping children:

– Build vocabulary through immersive, story-themed play

– Practise storytelling and imaginative narrative

– Feel a genuine sense of excitement and ownership over their learning space

– Connect reading with joyful, sensory experiences

At Fireflies Early Learning, we believe some of our best book week ideas come from asking, what if our whole room became part of the story?

Our Literary Landscape Program

Story World Corners

Each week, a different corner of our centre transforms into a scene from a favourite book, complete with props, costumes, and small world figures for imaginative play.

Collaborative Story Murals

Children contribute to a large, growing mural inspired by their favourite stories, adding characters and scenes as the month progresses.

Reading Trail

A simple trail of clues and story snippets leads children through the centre, encouraging movement, prediction, and a sense of adventure tied to reading.

Character Dress-Up Station

A dedicated dress-up corner filled with costumes and props lets children step directly into their favourite stories throughout August.

Building a Literary Landscape at Home

Families can bring some of our book week ideas home with simple projects such as building a pillow fort inspired by a favourite story, creating a reading corner with cushions and fairy lights, or acting out a story together as a family.

At Fireflies Early Learning, watching children step into their favourite stories, quite literally, has been one of the most joyful parts of our August, and we cannot wait for Book Week itself to arrive.
