Understanding the 3 Day Guarantee: What Cooroy Families Need to Know

Starting 5 January 2026, every eligible family in Cooroy will receive at least 72 hours of subsidised childcare each fortnight, no questions asked about work hours. This change means more stability and support for families juggling unpredictable schedules, studying, or even job hunting. In this post, we’ll break down what the 3 Day Guarantee means for you and how it could make early learning more affordable and accessible at Fireflies Early Learning Centre.

What’s Changing for Cooroy Families

The Basics of the 3 Day Guarantee

From 5 January 2026, all families eligible for Child Care Subsidy (CCS) will automatically receive at least 72 hours of subsidised care per fortnight. This equals three full days of early learning each week at Fireflies Early Learning Centre.

The biggest change is the removal of the activity test for basic subsidy hours. Currently, your subsidised hours depend on how much you work, study or volunteer. Soon, every eligible family will get three days minimum, regardless of their activity hours.

Who Benefits Most

This change helps many Cooroy families, including:

  • Stay-at-home parents who previously received little or no subsidy

  • Casual workers with variable weekly hours

  • Single parents managing limited work schedules

  • Parents between jobs or searching for employment

  • Families with income from small businesses or freelance work

For example, a parent working 10 hours weekly from home might currently receive only 36 hours of subsidy per fortnight. From January, they’ll automatically get 72 hours, allowing their child to attend Fireflies three consistent days every week.

Special Provisions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children

Families caring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children will receive 100 hours of subsidised care per fortnight—nearly five full days weekly.

This increased support happens automatically once you’ve informed Services Australia that you’re caring for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander child through your Centrelink online account.

What You Need to Know

Current CCS Recipients

If you already receive Child Care Subsidy, you don’t need to do anything. Services Australia will automatically update your entitlement on 5 January using information they already have.

New CCS Applicants

If you’re new to claiming CCS, apply through Services Australia as usual. The process is being simplified from January 2026.

Changing Your Booking Days

The subsidy guarantee doesn’t automatically book extra days for your child—it means the government will subsidise those days. You still need to arrange attendance with us.

If you’d like to increase your child’s days from January, please call us on 07 5309 1100. We expect many Cooroy families will want additional days, so it’s best to discuss this sooner rather than later.

Understanding Gap Fees

The 3 Day Guarantee increases your subsidised hours but doesn’t change your subsidy percentage or eliminate gap fees. You’ll still pay a gap fee based on your family income.

The significant saving comes from no longer paying full, unsubsidised fees. If you were attending two days but only receiving a subsidy for one, you were paying full price for that second day. Now all three days will be subsidised.

Real Benefits for Sunshine Coast Families

Financial Relief

For many Cooroy and Sunshine Coast families, childcare costs have been a major expense. The 3 Day Guarantee eases this financial pressure, making early learning more accessible.

Educational Advantages

Quality early learning benefits all children through:

  • School readiness preparation

  • Social skills development

  • Emotional regulation practice

  • Language development

  • Confidence building

Research shows children attending quality early learning at least three days weekly develop stronger foundations for school success.

Community Impact

For our Cooroy, Pomona, Eumundi and surrounding communities, this means more children accessing quality early education regardless of their parents’ work situations.
